Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines, two of the biggest budget carriers, have announced they have plans to merge. This combination would create the fifth largest U.S airline by market share.
They said in a statement that they would save consumers over $1 billion annually from the merger, and that neither of the airlines would lay off employees, in fact, they expect to hire over 10,000 workers by 2026.
The deal comes as the airline industry tries to move past the pandemic. Some details about how the company would operate remain uncertain. The merger is expected to close in the second half of the year.
