In a significant step towards a sustainable aviation future, Embraer announced a groundbreaking collaboration with American Airlines. The leading U.S. carrier has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to become part of Embraer's Energia Advisory Group. This group comprises seasoned aviation experts, airlines, lessors, suppliers, and other industry specialists, all dedicated to advising Embraer in the development of sustainable aircraft for the future.
American Airlines, renowned for its commitment to sustainable aviation, was named the Eco-Airline of the Year in 2023 by Air Transport World. The airline boasts the youngest mainline fleet and the largest regional fleet among U.S. network carriers. In 2022, American consumed over two million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel and invested in hydrogen-powered propulsion and infrastructure development.
With this partnership, American will work closely with the advisory group and Embraer to define the performance and design requirements for four conceptual Energia aircraft. These aircraft, ranging from 9 to 50 seats, will incorporate various electric, hydrogen, and hybrid propulsion technologies.
Jill Blickstein, Vice President of Sustainability at American, expressed enthusiasm for this collaboration: "As the operator of the largest regional fleet in the U.S., we believe that industry collaborations aimed at advancing decarbonization technologies are essential to help aviation achieve its net-zero emissions goal by 2050. We look forward to working with Embraer and the other members of the Energia Advisory Group to develop the next generation of zero-emission aircraft."
